Government involvement means stricter requirements on the parameters of production. All bonded whiskey is required to be from the same season, the same mash type and the same distillery. They are aged a minimum of four years in a federally bonded warehouse. These measures ensure a certain level of quality of the whiskey and can be an indication of the skill of the distiller.
Bonded whiskey tends to have a higher ABV concentration and is typically more expensive to produce. Each bottle is labeled to classify the whiskey at bonded-in-bottle. The label will include the bonded distinction and the distillery.
